Christoph Niemann was born in 1970 in Waiblingen, Germany. After studying at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design, he worked in New York for 11 years as an illustrator, animator and graphic designer, before moving to Berlin. His work has appeared on the covers of The New Yorker, Newsweek, Wired, The New York Times and American Illustration. He has won several awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and the associations American Illustration and the Art Directors Club.
In 2000, together with Nicholas Blechman and Paul Sahre, he published the book Fresh Dialogue One: New Voices in Graphic Design, at the invitation of AIGA as part of a series of presentations of promising designers. In 2005 he and Blechman published 100% Evil. He has written and illustrated the children's books The Pet Dragon and The Police Cloud, and illustrated the book The Boy with Two Belly Buttons. He writes and illustrates the blog Abstract City for the New York Times website. In 2010 one of his blog posts, I LEGO N.Y., was published in book form. In it, he presents his favourite memories of New York with the help of Lego. Niemann is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale.
